Numbers 21:8, "Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.'"

The people are traveling by the way of the Red Sea and became very discouraged. I can understand their discouraged state: the older generation has been told that they will not enter the promise land, they have been thirsty, hungry, Aaron just died along with others all around them. But in their discouragement they spoke out against God and God's servant Moses. They sinned greatly! The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people and many of them died. Moses was instructed by God to make a fiery serpent, put it on a pole and raise it up. The very creature causing people to die Moses was to make and If anyone had been bitten, they could look at the bronze serpent on the pole and live. The message here is pointing to Jesus. All of us have been bitten by the fiery serpent of sin and on the cross lifted up, Jesus became sin for us, the very thing that condemns people and anyone who looks to Jesus will be saved from this fiery serpent of sin. The uplifted snake was the only cure, just as Jesus is the only Savior in the world. Noah body could look at the bronze serpent for another person, and each sinner must look to Jesus for themselves. The only Israelite people that could not be saved were those who did not look at the serpent raised up on the pole. How important it is for us to get the Gospel of Jesus out for others to see and know Christ!
